Setup & Overview
| 1. Click the Start button: |
| 2. Select Windows Movie Maker: |
| 3. Before we begin editing, there are a few key areas you need to understand within the WMM interface: |
| 4. Here's a closer look at the timeline. As you can see, there are rows to place video/image files, audio files, title/text, and transition effects (e.g. fade in / fade out). You'll learn how to do all of these things in the following lesson. |
Importing Files for the Video
| 1. Let's start by importing some image files to work with. Click File > Import into Collections... |
| 2. As you can see, the four image files selected were added into the Collections Library: |
Adding Text to Video
| 1. Now that we have some files to work with, we can dive right in and create our video by adding content to our timeline. Let's start by adding an intro title by selecting Tools > Titles and Credits... |
| 2. Select "title at the beginning": |
| 3. Enter the text you would like displayed as your title: |
| 4. After entering your text, click "change the title animation" to bring life to your text: |
| 5. After selecting a text effect, click "change the text font and color": |
| 6. When you're finished, click "Done, add title to movie" and you'll see that your title text has been added to the timeline of your video: |
| Notice that by dragging over the edges of the clip, you can adjust the length of time that it displays. |
| 7. Now let's preview our masterpiece. Simply, click on the play button in the video preview display on the right of the screen: |
| Here's what we got so far... |
Adding Images to Video
| 1. Now let's add some of our images into the video. Simply, drag one of the images you imported in your Collections Library into the timeline. Make sure it's after the title you created: |
| Note: you can also import other videos from your home videos or digital camera into your Collections Library. But for the purposes of this tutorial, we'll just use images. |
| 2. After successfully dragging your image into the timeline, it should look like this: |
| 3. Feel free to adjust the length of time the image is displayed. Again, to do this, simply click and drag the edges of the image clip in the timeline: |
| 4. Here's how the timeline looks after dragging all four images: |
Video Transitions
| 1. Now let's add some video transition effects. This will make the transition between images look smooth. WMM provides a full library of transitions you can play around with. For this video, we'll use the fade transition. Start by clicking Tools > Video Transitions: |
| 2. You will now see a full list of transition effects. Click and drag the Fade effect into the timeline between the title clip and the first image clip: |
| 3. Here's how the timeline will look after you successfully drag in the effect: |
| And here's how the video looks so far... |
| 4. Here's how the timeline will look after you successfully drag in the effect between all four images: |
| And after adding all the fades, here's how the video looks... |
Adding Text Over Images
| 1. Next we'll add some brief captions in for each image. Click Tools > Titles and Credits... and then select "title on the selected clip": |
| 2. Enter the text you would like to display for the first image: |
| If necessary edit the font and text color. When complete, click "Done, add title to movie". |
| 3. Here's how the text will look in the timeline. As you can see, it is placed in the Title Overlay row: |
| 4. Here's how the timeline will look when we add text over all the images: |
| Here's how the video looks... |

Video Effects & End Credits
| 1. Another feature that we'll go through are Video Effects. Let's create a black and white theme. To do this, we'll need to add the Grayscale Effect to our images. Click on Tools > Video Effects: |
| 2. You will now see a full list of video effects. Click and drag the Grayscale effect into the timeline onto each of the image clips: |
| 3. The image clips in the timeline will now have a star on them: |
| Here's how the video looks now... |
| 4. Now let's add some end credits to the movie. Click on Tools > Title and Credits... and then click "credits at the end": |
| 5. Type in your ending text, and it'll be added to the end of your timeline: |
Adding Audio to Video
| 1. Finally, what's a video without some tunes. Click on File > Import into Collections... and select the audio file you would like to import into the Collections Library: |
| 2. Drag the audio file into the timeline: |
| 3. Place the audio clip in sync with the image files and you're done! |
| Here's the final result... |
Saving Video
| 1. To save your video, click File > Save Movie File... |
| 2. Enter the name of the file and the directory you want to save it in: |
| 3. Select the file type you want to save it as. Remember, your file size must be 60MB or less + the file types must be either .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. For best file size and quality, try the following settings. This may be different for each video, so you may have to try a few times to get it right.
